Leaf-like, thick, soft but cartilagineous polymorphic thallus, fixed to the substrate by a system of claw-like rhizoids; lanceolate branches, often with thorny proliferations, particularly abundant during summer; 10 to 30cm. Brownish red (to orange if exposed to freshwater). The proliferations are mean of vegetative reproduction. The gametophyte and the sporophyte are similar. The base of the thallus is perennial, while the branches show important seasonal variations; found in shaded biotopes, commonly from -10 down to -25m, but recorded down to -120m. Tallo polimorfico, a forma di foglia, di consistenza cartilaginea ma flessibile, fissato al substrato da un sistema di rizoidi a forma di clava; ramificazioni lanceolate, spesso con proliferazioni spinose, particolarmente abbondante durante l'estate; altezza tra 10 e 30cm. Colore rosso brunastro (arancione se esposto all'acqua dolce). Le proliferazioni sono mezzi di proliferazione vegetativa. Il gametofito e lo sporofito sono simili. La base del tallo è perennante, mentre le ramificazioni mostrano una importante variazione stagionale: si trova in ambienti ombreggiati, di solito tra -10 e -25m, ma è stata segnalata fino a -120m. .
