	. Thallus with thin, cylindrical stipe, irregularly branched to form stolons and flattened branches, divided by constrictions in oval successive segments (2mm wide). General aspect as dense pillows 5mm to 2cm thick. Dark red to brownish black. The gametophyte and the sporophyte are similar. Perennial species, found in shaded, shallow biotopes and in overhanging rocks. Il tallo è provvisto di uno stipo cilindrico e sottile, irregolarmente ramificato a formare stoloni e ramificazioni appiattite, divise da restringimenti in segmenti successivi ovali, larghi 2mm. L'aspetto generale è di densi cuscinetti spessi da 2 a 5cm. Colore da rosso scuro a nero brunastro. Il gametofito e lo sporofito sono simili. Specie perennante, si trova in ambienti ombreggiati superficiali o su rocce aggettanti. .
